Is Campi Flegrei, the volcano just below Naples about to explode?
The magma has been rising regularly for over 20 years now, but suddenly the speed has been accelerating with a surge of earthquakes over the last 2 weeks. It may have reached less than 500 meters below ground!
What is the chance of an eruption? According to local scientists, it may be extremely high and the volcano could explode ANY time.
The problem? Well, it's Italy. There are currently 500,000 people living in the caldera who should be evacuated immediately. But then, what about the 6 million inhabitants of Naples which is squeezed between Campi Flegrei and the Vesuvius?
If there is an eruption, even a mild one, we may have a catastrophe on the scale of Pompeii. The economy of Italy would be on its knees.
(PS: Look at the map at 19mn 15" - 500,000 people live in the Pozzuoli Circle and 6 million in the city of Naples.)
