Europe is contemplating the check mate of its strategy in Ukraine but what's more important is how we got there. The analysis of Mearsheimer is detailed and accurate. So what's next? Will Europe accept defeat and face reality? This is of course extremely unlikely so they will most probably double down which is why Putin yesterday told them that Russia was ready for war. Europe obviously is not. Didn't they say 2029 at the earliest recently?
The US is contemplating the disaster and is trying to find a way out. But how do you escape a quagmire you've helped build over a decade? "Not easy!" to borrow the words of the American negotiators, is an euphemism. On the one hand, the US controls the battlefield on the Western side with their missiles and satellite imagery which means the war could stop overnight if they wanted it to stop. Trump is willing, but then there is the "other" side: Credibility and the deep state which still controls part of congress with money and other means. "That" makes the equation difficult and indirectly transfer the battlefield to Washington.
So what happens next? I don't know. The regime in Kiev is in the process of disintegrating. Washington senses it and wants an "agreement" urgently. Europe remains in denial with its dream of bygone grandeur. Intervention would send a few thousand soldiers to their immediate death on the front line. Indirect intervention means war.
